Lee Kong Chian School Of Medicine (Novena Campus)
A Place for Immersive Learning
The key design goal for the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a partnership between Imperial College London and Nanyang Technological University Singapore, was to provide a creative and conducive environment for cross-disciplinary learning, knowledge exchange and skills-acquisition.
The Clinical Sciences Building at the Novena campus houses state-of-the-art learning spaces and advanced research facilities that support the delivery of innovative medical education and research. Custom-designed facilities such as the Anatomy Learning Centre and the Centre for Clinical Simulation, offer immersive and life-like clinical experiences.
The tower is organised into four inter-related zones: The Tapestry, an outdoor communal space with an open plaza and pockets of greenery that is designed to provide visual connection to the existing conserved heritage building and houses the school’s headquarters; The Forum, a platform to promote the exchange of ideas between the academic body and healthcare professionals, and includes teaching facilities such as the auditorium, learning studio and seminar rooms; The Matrix, a network of spaces that unifies offices, research laboratories and collaboration spaces to form the main body of the building; and, at the top, The Learning and Knowledge Centre, the medical library, which symbolises the consolidation of learning and knowledge, a beacon of enlightenment.
The design considerations included the provision of interactive and collaborative spaces to promote the exchange of ideas; connectivity to the surroundings with properly segregated pedestrian and vehicular flow; modularity, flexibility and buildability to respond to evolving user needs; a design that supports IT and paperless and electronic learning; universal design that is inclusive and accessible; and environmentally sustainable design with the best rating of BCA Green Mark Platinum.
