Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Beach Road
A Visual Counterpoint
The 15-storey hotel tower, a solid block form, situated above an existing 5-storey car park at the junction of Beach Road, Ophir Flyover and Nicoll Highway, provides a visual counterpoint to the existing Plaza Parkroyal hotel, a triangular prism form.
The form’s dark colours and subtle shape are designed to complement the existing hotel. Its façade features an animated composition of fins and two-tone grey reflective glass, positioned at different planes to achieve a layering effect. The envelope treatment of vertical fins is extended to the existing multi-storey car park, to lighten its former heavy appearance and to visually connect the entire complex.
The hotel addition is programmed with 180 guest suites in one- and two-bed configurations, with views of Nicoll Highway, Beach Road, Marina Bay and Arab Street; it is topped by a roof deck with an infinity-edge swimming pool and gym.
The refurbishment involved the conversion of a former furniture store into high-volume ballrooms and pre-function areas. A partial demolition of a former retail block presented an opportunity to carve out a new open landscaped courtyard with which the pre-function programmes connect. This public courtyard connects with the pedestrian spaces alongside the roadways leading to the city centre.
A 15-metre building setback maintains a boulevard character along this stretch of Nicoll Highway, and a lush landscape buffer protects pedestrian spaces from the vehicular street.
