Trinity Christian Centre
A Garden of Worship
Situated off Paya Lebar Road, the Trinity Christian Centre serves four functions: a community hub, a bible school, a hostel and a place of worship. Constrained by very stringent planning guidelines, the development comprises four distinct blocks arranged around a rectangular courtyard interlinked by bridges.
Some of the key episodes of the Bible are interwoven into the landscape, beginning from the seven days of creation at the entrance, and culminating in the cross of Christ which is denoted by a water feature.
Conceived as a theatrical backdrop to tell the story of Christianity, the undulating stone façade of the community hub consists of beige and black granite panels which are reminiscent of the canyons and cliffs of Israel. Used mainly by youths, the community hub also contains all the spaces which generate a vibrant, energetic and non-conformist atmosphere.
In contrast, the bible school is seen as a more meditative environment where spaces are designed to provide an air of tranquil timelessness. The hostel block occupies a separate wing.
As a holy place of worship, the sanctuary is also designed to be the most approachable building of all. The intention is to create a sense of awe at the power and might of God that combines with the sense of the humility of Christ as demonstrated by his incarnation.
The main intention is to bring forth the spiritual meaning of Christianity subtly through the physical form while engaging the visitors with its underlying themes as they move through the various spaces of the buildings.
